I’ve tried to give Sarah Palin at least a tiny benefit of the doubt but this statement proves without a shadow of doubt in my mind that she is a complete and utter idiot.Death Panels! really, she really believes that people are going to have to go in front of some sort of panel and they will decide who lives or dies. She can’t really believe that.Maybe she mispoke, yeah that’s it.That’s so absurd.I hope everyone reads that line again and again and comes away thinking this woman is crazy and living in some sort of loony tunes land.At opne time I was willing to give her a listen and possibly vote for her but with her spewing lunatic crap like that she loses all credibility.I can almost guarentee this much though,if I were to ask her what ideas she had for health care reform she probably couldn’t answer the question.

Don’t you think she is likely using figurative language to provide impact to her argument. Does anyone think people are going to be standing before a committee to see if they get a potentially life saving procedure?

Keep in mind that this already happens within insurance companies. They have medical case management staff (usually nurses and doctors) that review requests for procedures and determine whether it’s approved or denied. The good part about having an insurance company do this is that there is legal recourse. You won’t have any legal recourse with government mandated healthcare.

What you will likely have with government healthcare is a bunch of bureaucrates and political appointees determining who gets what.

The government does such a lousy job at most of the institutions it supports (education, DMV, post office, FCC, etc.). Are we really going to open the doors for them to manage our healthcare?

I’d be more open to hearing what our leaders have to say if they were willing to forego their rich insurance packages for this proposed one. Or how about tort reform, which bankrupts many physicians with expensive mal practice coverage. But as usual in washington, do as I say, not as I do.

I also don’t believe this has any place at the federal level. Needs to be a state by state initiative. And why don’t they just make it mandatory like car insurance? Why can’t someone buy a catastophic medical insurance policy specifically for emergency situations? It’s because the government won’t let insurance companies sell bare bone policies. Too much government has already increased the cost of medicine.

    OC,

I look at comments SP made during the campaign (i.e. “Palling around with terrorists, “Real America, Real Americans”, etc.) and come to the conclusion that she “shoots from the lips”. You don’t need to continue to use “figurative language” especially when it distorts your message, time and time again. When SP is incapable of stringing together a coherent thought (too many examples to give – just see death camps and resignation speech) she tends to do what makes her comfortable and that is taking the position of attack dog with obviously disastrous outcomes. Every time she tries to crank up the base, she steps in a pile of excrement.

Now, in your first statement, you defend SP. 1st mistake. Just admit, she blew it again. Even Reps. are saying she was off-base on this one. In your second statement, you go on to affirm SP’s claim, by agreeing that this already occurs. If this is true, would that invalidate SP’s opposition to something that already exists? Also, why doesn’t she rail against the status quo, rather than make it appear that Obama is making a drastic shift from what currently happens? I guess that would undermine your excuse for her statement. the fact that insurance companies have people to review claims, is laughable. If you think the people who work FOR insurance companies have the patient’s interests at heart, I have a waterfront pice of land to sell you in Idaho. Legal recourse law varies and the lawyers for these groups lobby the folks who right the law. C’mon, please.

The Govt. does a lousy job….blah, blah, blah. This excuse has been offered for every reason opponents can give for offering more govt services. NOW, while Ronnie, viewed the govt as the problem, and not the solution, I’m sure as hell glad the govt, didn’t just stand around with its thumb up its butt while the markets, melted. I will give you the argument that we need not look to the govt to be any kind of savior, however, govt is not our mortal foe.

It is misguided at best to blame the govt for the state of public education. Let me tell you firsthand. When we have parents and students who are indifferent to education, when we have foreign students sitting in our public schools without the basic skills needed in English, when we have compulsory education laws, how in the HELL do you dare blame the govt? State & local entitites need to have fire held to their feet, then the pressure would build. It’s the people, not the Govt! What’s wrong with your DMV? I live in crazy-ass L.A. and by making an appt. I can get in and out in no time. The Post office, well lets’ see, in an age of email, faxes, texting, and on-line apps it is much easier (and cheaper) to move correspondence back and forth electronically than it is through the mail system. Wouldn’t you agree? I know that I have not had anything lost by mail, but if I were elderly, without access to the internet, and maybe alone, I would think the rates and services offered by the USPS are quite adequate.

But I guess this is just another chance to berate the U.S. Govt and its entities rather than engage in thoughtful debate.

Why not have honest debates without the hyperbole, lies and unethical behavior? Oh well, I guess we can just chalk it up to figurative language!

A state by state initiative. Oh boy. There are so many arguments against this one, but the most important one would allow the companies to sell across state lines. Each state’s insurance commisioner would have to work with the companies to make each policy work across state lines or be equal, to stay in business.

Let’s stop giving excuses, get a bipartisan commission together, and get this solved. We are a strong nation, and we can do it, if we don’t allow the NO-men and the Lefties get in the way. Finally, engaging in shout downs is not being patriotic or demonstrating your rights; it’s called being an (obstructionist) asshole.

No.I don’t think she actually means it which makes it much worse. To use the term “Death Panel” and also imply that Obama wants to kill your babies espicially Trig, did you know that Trig has downs snydrome? Yeah I had no clue either except for the fact that she mentions it every single chance that she can.,she dishonestly puts out misinformation for that small but vocal lunatic fringe to cling on to and then it spreads to people who only get their news and information through the likes of Glen Beck or people of his ilk. It’s dishonest and shouldn’t be tolerated because she knows its not true

  • OC-Libertarian

    Oh my…

I can’t help it if there are people that want to take what she says literally or think the general population is so stupid as to believe there are actual “Death Panels” (I’m not saying anyone here is stupid). Let’s be honest, this is going to be a propaganda war and you should be just as annoyed when Obama tried to throw doctors under the bus.

Do you truly believe most doctors are the enemy?

Look. “You come in and you’ve got a bad sore throat, or your child has a bad sore throat or has repeated sore throats. The doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, ‘You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid’s tonsils out.’” Stuff like that. It’s sick.

Doctors take out too many tonsils. They push too many pills.

By limiting tonsillectomies and the number of pills doctors prescribe, wouldn’t you be building in to your new structure precisely the rationing you deny it would contain?

As my Budget Director Peter Orszag has recommended, we would have a panel of doctors and bureaucrats determining who would receive what level of care. These are difficult decisions, so it would be a distinguished panel.

Regarding Palin, I read her speech and the only thing that was “off” was the media comment, but that’s her M.O – bashing the media. You’d expect that from her. Any other digs are just your partisan and prejudicial view of her. So she doesn’t speak like a lawyer, I’ll take her twang any day over Pelosi who went so far as to call citizens who are interested in the democratic process un-American and holding swastikas. Talk about your damaging rhetoric.

Talking about government agencies, Education in the US costs more per student than any other idustrialized nation and we have the worst results. While parents do play a large part in the problem, it is also the growing bureaucracy within the districts (i.e., teachers versus administrative personnel) and the unions who are more concerned with gaining political points in the capital than improving student development, that is causing the disintegration of our education system.

Regarding the Postal Service, let’s not dumb it down. They’re cost structure is higher than their competitors and they actually hired FedEx a few years ago to help with improving their organization. By your point, the Postal Service should have anticipated the decline in traditional mail (it’s not like email proliferation hasn’t been coming for 10+ years) and made the necessary adjustments like any other business would have to do to ensure its viability. I’m not saying get rid of the postal service as it’s one of the few things federal government is mandated to do. Again, just pointing out how they don’t exactly do a great job.

Don’t get me started on the two giant entitlement programs: Medicare and Social Security. With SS insolvent by 2032, we will be left supporting the retired community.

I’m just pointing out that the government in many cases fails to run efficiently. So why should we expect them to manage healthcare efficiently? Clean up the rest of the mess before taking on this huge program. Even the congressional budget office says that this will increase our debt, rich people alone will not be able to pay for it, and it won’t cover the 45M citizens Obama keeps advertising. Do you really want the government managing your healthcare? Why are they rushing this?

State by state would be more appropriate than a federal program for several reasons. The best reason would be that it would provide state citizens a vote. if everone in California voted to approve a state healthcare option that included a mandate for state citizens to have health insurance (like they do car insurance), and they had a range of policies available from emergency only to PPO plans they could purchase for a reasonable fee (not free), that would be a step in the right direction. This is similar to how the state manages workers compensation. Companies can go through insurance companies or through the state fund to purchase their workers comp insurance.

My honest opinion is that I don’t trust the government to manage this approrpiately. My opinion is based on not only existing established programs that are running inefficiently, but also the many countries that have fully socialized medicine.

    OC,

Let’s not play this game. Sarah says what she means and means what she says. She is no different than the “Birthers” who claim Obama isn’t eligible to be POTUS. You see, the ONE thing I do give SP credit for is that she speaks her mind. She targets a certain demographic and speaks directly to them. She is one side of the culture war! She definitely stands up for this one side. I do not fault her for her choice! I applaud her for taking a stand. My issue with her and others (either from the left or right) is bullshitting people with these outlandish statements. Whether it comes from the left, saying Ronnie would have the elderly eating dog food, or from SP saying BS like this. It is divisive, unethical, and outright lying to the American people. The (R) party is always talking of values, and character. If lying to scare people means Conservative, Real American values, we have a much larger problem. At the core of this problem is the failure of SP supporters to acknowledge that she frequently goes WAY past credible in her statements because she is trying to reach the base of the party. An honest supporter would realize this is one reason it would be difficult for SP to be considered for any office: SP ONLY resonates with the far right-wing of the (R) party. Her statements push moderates of both parties away. I realize that many people are hanging on the next word or challenge from Obama. This is to be expected. However, when SP brings Trig (yet again!!!!!!!) into the public sphere and makes such XXXXXX XXX claims, she should be called on it.

Distrust and skepticism of government is healthy when warranted. What it comes down to in my opinion is electing people to the local, state and national offices who are honest from the beginning. When we can disentangle ourselves from petty party politics and govern for the people and not for the party, we will truly see an effective government.
