The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under Janet Napolitano has gone completely insane. In something more fitting for Iraq under Saddam Hussein or Castro’s Cuba, it has launched what can be considered the groundwork in a pre-emptive strike agaisnt what it perceives to be enemies of the state.

In a report aptly titled ‘Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment‘ here is what the DHS had to say about our veterans and individuals who have beleifs which are right of center.
The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) has no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.
Now, I don’ tknow about you, but for a government agency, espeically one charged with keeping us safe to come out with a document that admits
-it has ‘no specific information’ , to back up its very outlandish claims,
-that the people it is targetting may not be doing what they claim they are doing
any right thinking person has to become very concerned at the direction we are heading. There are numerous examples of societies where the leader first of all painted his opponents with a broad brush, then levelled charges against them, and then summarily got rid of them. In the past I would have said such can never happen in the USA, but under Obama, who knows?
The report also cited that:
A prominent civil rights organization reported in 2006 that “large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the [U.S.] armed forces.”
The group they are citing is ‘The Southern Poverty Legal Center’, SPLC, a group that claims the American Legion is a Hate Group.
The report gets even more bogus when one realizes that a 2008 report from the FBI states that between 2001 and 2008, out of 1,416,037 active duty military personel, and 23,816,000 veterans and there were 203 (two hundred and three) individuals with confirmed or claimed military service active in the extremist movement.
Thankfully the American Legion has stepped up to defend our veterans:
The best that I can say about your recent report is that it is incomplete. The report states, without any statistical evidence, “The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”
In spite of this incomplete, and, I fear, politically-biased report, The American Legion and the Department of Homeland Security share many common and crucial interests, such as the Citizen Corps and disaster preparedness. Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion. I would be happy to meet with you at a time of mutual convenience to discuss issues such as border security and the war on terrorism. I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are.
