“I don’t fully understand what the $700 Billion (stimulus) is going to do, I am not saying this is going to work… but at least we all feel as Americans … that we are trying to do something”
-Charlie Rangel, Chair Ways and Means Committee
Now if such a statement came from a regular person on the street, maybe it would be forgivable, but this is coming from Charles (Charlie) Rangel who is the Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means.
What does the Committe on Ways and Means do?
Why, the Committee of Ways and Means is the chief tax-writing committee of the United States House of Representatives. The Committee has jurisdiction over all taxation, tariffs and other revenue-raising measures, as well as a number of other programs including:
Social Security
Unemployment benefits
Medicare
So if the person in charge of the committee that is in charge of putting in place the framework for raising revenue for the US Treasury has no clue how this Stimulus Bill works, why is it being passed? To merely claim that “we are trying to do something” is bizarre.
It’s like having a headache and chopping off your finger so you can feel like you’ve done something…
Either way, for those who want to see the video of the Chair’s admission of cluelessness, here it is:
