An oldie but goodie…
One of Obama’s Earmark Requests Was for the Hospital That Employs Michelle Obama
Dan Riehl notes, via Amanda Carpenter, that in the list of earmarks he requested, $1 million was requested for the construction of a new hospital pavilion at the University Of Chicago. The request was put in in 2006.
You know who works for the University of Chicago Hospital?
Michelle Obama. She’s vice president of community affairs.
As Byron noted, “In 2006, the Chicago Tribune reported that Mrs. Obama’s compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she is a vice president for community affairs, jumped from $121,910 in 2004, just before her husband was elected to the Senate, to $316,962 in 2005, just after he took office.”
Looks like that raise was worth it.
Guess who else tried to do the same exact thing? Why Rod Blagojevich of course:
Mr. Blagojevich on Oct. 8 discussed with one of his campaign fundraisers pressing the executive — named in the criminal complaint as “Hospital Executive 1” — for a $50,000 campaign contribution, allegedly a quid pro quo for the governor’s recent funding commitment, according to the affidavit.
“I’m going to do $8 million for them. I want to get (Hospital Executive 1) for 50,” Mr. Blagojevich told the fundraiser, according to the 78-page affidavit.
Only difference is he only wanted $50,000 for an $8,000,000 earmark, Obama’s family got a whopping $200,000 for a $1,000,000 earmark…
Of course, Blagojevich didn’t leave his Patty, his wife out:
In exchange for the Senate appointment, Blagojevich discussed:
Placing his wife on paid corporate boards where he speculated she might garner as much as $150,000 a year;
Still $150,000 less than Michell got as a result of Obama’s good work for the Chicago hospital, but a significant sum compared to what Jack and Jill public make…
