McCain Suspends Campaign To Focus On Fixing Economic Crisis…

For John McCain / Sarah Palin, it is always “Country First“.
John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.
Obama meanwhile insists that the debate is still on
“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”
However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…
Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.
To back up his commitment to suspend the campaign, McCain is yanking his campaign ads.
McCain was responding inter alia to yesterday’s call by Harry Reid :
“We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.”
Incidentally, Harry Reid had a different tune today when McCain called him on his bluff:
A Democrat tells ABC News that, in a phone call late this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that it would NOT be helpful for him to come back to Washington, D.C., to work on the Wall Street bailout bill.
“This is a critical time for our country,” says the Reid statement. “While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”
A source close to Reid said McCain didn’t have much to say after that.

I think Reid fears more than just the idea that McCain will “risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy.” What Reid fears is that McCain will return to lead the Republican effort to reach a compromise, and the Senate and House GOP will let him do it. If McCain takes ownership of the bailout effort and manages to get his suggestions on limiting executive compensation and so on as part of the finished product, he will be able to trot McCain-Dodd on the campaign trail as yet another reform he’s accomplished by working across the aisle. And in a time of crisis, no less.
And what will Obama be able to say? He gave a couple of speeches and raised cash for himself while McCain went to work for the nation.
Meanwhile it seems McCain wants to postpone the VP debate as well, good move Maverick. Can’t be like Nero who played the fiddle while Rome burned…
It also seems that McCain will NOT take part in the debate if there is no resolution reached in Congress by Friday on the bailout.

Obama wants to continue with the Debates -by himself of course - it will be a perfect situation - there won’t be anyone around to question or judge him.
I agree with McCain. This is a very serious situation that both of the Senators should be present and on the record with this vote.
Obama as usual wants to avoid a vote.
McCain offered 10 meetings with him over the summer but now he feels that this debate is the most important thing for Americans.
Poll results state that most Americans, nearly 90% want both of them to participate in the bailout since it is in their job descriptions and they are getting paid while being out on the campaign.
Obama states that in 40 days the person will be elected who will have to deal with the decision, yet he dosen’t want to participate.
He is a disgrace and always has been. Again, like in all positions he has ever held, he is a do nothing say anything candidate!
Gee, what a surprise. McCain playing politics with the economic crisis (which he won’t be able to do squat about anyway, he and Obama have missed so many votes while on the campaign trail, and neither of them are on the appropriate committees).
So what is this, really, then? I mean, it’s obviously a game. But McCain’s further request to knock back the VP debate is, in all likelihood, an excuse because his campaign knows damn well Palin isn’t anywhere near ready to face Biden.
Assuming that things still happen as planned, Biden will eat her alive… As Bill Maher said, “Sarah Barracuda? Meet Joey the Shark.”
This little game is just as contrived and just as insulting as Palin’s choice as VP in the first place. Besides you lot, does McCain really think most of us are stupid enough to believe he’s doing this out of commitment to country? LOL.

If the President were overseas he would return for this. Obama isn’t president yet, he is a Senator, and he needs to go do a Senator’s job and help with the hammering out of this bill that will in essence, put everything we citizens have worked for at risk.
Hell with spending a couple of hours convincing me with words that he is the best candidate - why not go to Washington and PROVE it. His response makes no sense. He said: “With respect to the debates, it’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess.” Why not go back and work to make sure that it is the smallest “mess” possible? He would have us believe he has the best answer for this - why not share it with the Senate - the only place that answer matters right now.
Looks to me like more of the Obama blame game. Stay out of the fray, and blame everyone else for the outcome. But hey, he believes he can’t win without Florida, and him being elected is President is worth far more to us than the value of our homes, and our life savings.
He must be thrilled that he will be able to debate on foreign policy by himself, instead of showing a bit of actual leadership.

Does anyone ever wonder if Obama could have held an actual job where he wasn’t just the golden boy supported by those around him? where he actaully had a job to do and did it?
Look at Hillary, look at McCain - they focus on achieving the job at hand. Where is that in Obama? It’s not evident anywhere in anything he’s ever done. Oh, Palin is someone who will do what needs to be done, too, I think.
Now, Obama says that the plan that is being considered is the one he proposed, but even if that is true (which I doubt) he hasn’t done anything to make his ideas become reality. I can sit here and tell you exactly how the country should be run - and do a good job at that - but it doesn’t amount to much unless I’m there pushing those policies through.
Obama should go back and work with Ayers and get out of the race.

Ayers and Al-Mansour appear to have been in contact. Ayers vouched for Obama to Al-Mansour, who then began a law school fund-raising campaign among prominent African-Americans.
Obama’s law degree thus appears to have been financed through the encouragement of persons who had been violent revolutionaries and remain unrepentant to this day, the same unconventional way the purchase of Obama’s Chicago mansion was party financed by an Iraqi billionaire.
Why did Obama get hired as a “summer associate” in 1989 at the law firm which had hired Ayers’ wife, and where Ayers’ father was a prominent friend of the managing partner at Sidley & Austin? The answer is obvious. Ayers was grooming Obama as his future “front.”
Where did Obama get his first and only legal job after Harvard? At a law firm where Tony Rezko was a prominent client and where name partner Judson Miner was a law school classmate of Bernadine Dohrn-Ayers. Yes, the pieces are starting to come together.
Was Obama telling ABC the truth when he said met the Ayers’ at a coffee klatch at the Ayers home in 1995? Ayers had already been working with Obama for seven years; Ayers had appointed Obama to head a $50 million foundation. Did Ayers appoint a stranger? Or a front man? The answer is obvious.
Obama has relentlessly tried to conceal the Ayers/Obama time line, and the ongoing connections between the men. went to read your link; I was wondering what had happened to the whole Birth Certificate thing I knew the lawsuit had been filed. The FactCheck connection jives with an earlier post about the Annenberg Foundation being behind FactCheck.
I recently put together a post on his life and all the information is so hard to put together and I agree that his very unstable background jumps out at me. That in itself shouldn’t condemn a man. Some of the people from the time his family was in and out of Hawaii found that there are inconsistencies in his book.I I ended up wondering if his books were written as a way to establish a background story that he had control of.
The fact that he doesn’t just release a birth certificate or his records at Columbia University must mean that the cost of his releasing them is higher than the cost of keeping them under wraps. He already has so much control of the media, what would happen if he were president. Bush is basically a complete egotist but wasn’t so smart, Obama will be smart enough to fool more people for a longer time. We must do everything we can to keep him out of the White House.

Is it just me? I’m actually shocked by what has been thrown around as to why McCain wanted to ’suspend’ his campaign and ‘postpone’ the debates. Isn’t the current economic crisis sufficient reason to do so? I mean, yes, we should have debates, and asap, but for each day that the market is open and we don’t have some concrete ‘plan’, we are at greater risk of the world’s nervousness about the safety of the markets, and a potential ‘run’. Surely even the most naive Obama worshipper sees THIS as a little bit more important than whether the debate is held on Friday or next Monday. I’m perplexed at how this is being ’spun’. (although it would be great if Palin were able to step in and take over with the campaigning…but unfortunately or fortunately, that’s not going to happen).

Why did Obama originally lie about his association (”only a guy in my neighborhood ” ) or my favorite - from the campaign staff about their kids going to school together. When you say “He served on a board with the guy” which Board are you referring to, since he served on both the CAC board AND the Woods fund with Ayres. And I guess you are overlooking the “coming out” party Ayres held for him to introduce him in his first run for office. And apparently Obama doesn’t want anyone to look into it based on his threats to anyone who dares to question it. If it’s such a non-story, why not put all the questions to rest by releasing the facts?
As to Clinton’s pardons, frankly he made a number of them that I found HIGHLY questionable - but he is not running, so I fail to see how that would make Obama’s actions something to be ignored.
