If it were anyone else, I would be surprised, but since it is Barack Obama, not at all.
Why Obama would get this man a speaking spot at the DNC Convention is beyond me. This man being, Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois’ State Treasurer.
Here is what the New York Post wrote about Alexi Giannoulias in September 2007
“…A man who has long been dogged by charges that the bank his family owns (Broadway Bank) helped finance a Chicago crime figure will host a Windy City fund-raiser tonight for Sen. Barack Obama.
Alexi Giannoulias, who became Illinois state treasurer last year after Obama vouched for him, has pledged to raise $100,000 for the senator’s Oval Office bid.
Before he promised to raise funds for Obama, Giannoulias bankrolled Michael “Jaws” Giorango, a Chicagoan twice convicted of bookmaking and promoting prostitution. “ (GrandPUMA’s Sidenote: People who promote prostitution are called Pimps …)
it gets more interesting, the same article goes on to state that:
Giannoulias is so tainted by reputed mob links that several top Illinois Dems, including the state’s speaker of the House and party chairman, refused to endorse him even after he won the Democratic nomination with Obama’s help.
Giannoulias was the bank’s vice president and chief loan officer for most of the more than $15 million in loans.
Of course, it being Obama, there has to be a Rezko connection in there somewhere, according to an article in The Chicago Sun Times , Rezko wrote $450,000 in bad checks drawn to Broadway Bank, a Chicago financial institution for which Alexi Giannoulias listed himself both as President and as Chairman of the Board. Incidentally, Obama’s 2004 Senate Campaign funds were kept in that institution.
Of course this being Chicago politics, favors are being traded, but must they be traded so blatantly?
